Introduction

The Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) is one of the most authoritative and widely recognized non-examination high school diplomas in the world. The OSSD is issued by the provincial Ontario Ministry of Education and granted upon completion of diploma requirements in all publicly funded high schools in the province. Diploma requirements are determined provincially and are standard in all high schools in the province.

The OSSD is officially recognized by all top universities in the world and enjoys a high status in the global K-12 education system. This means that holding an OSSD can satisfy the dream of a top university worldwide.

How to I obtain an OSSD?

There are three requirements that all students must meet in order to be granted an Ontario Secondary School Diploma. Further specific information about these requirements can be found here.

1.

Students must successfully complete 30 credits, including 18 compulsory credits and 12 elective credits.

2.

Students must complete 40 hours of community service.

3.

Students must pass the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) or, in certain circumstances, successfully complete the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course (OSSLC).

What are the main advantages of earning an OSSD?

The OSSD is one of the most prestigious high school diplomas in the world. Here are a few of the advantages of earning an OSSD:

1.

High school diplomas in Ontario do not require a provincial exit examination like in many other countries worldwide, thus avoiding the extreme pressures of passing a national exit exam.

2.

Students in their final year of high school who earn a minimum of six (6) Grade 12 credits are eligible to apply to universities worldwide.

3.

In all secondary school courses leading to an OSSD in Ontario, teachers use a standard assessment (70% term work, 30% final assessment).  As a result, a student's ongoing efforts are recognized in order to obtain the credit.

4.

The OSSD is recognized worldwide and allows students to apply to universities almost anywhere: Canada, the US, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, etc.

5.

Since all secondary school courses are based on provincial curricular documents, those credits earned in one accredited high school in the province can be seamlessly transferred to another accredited high school for the purposes of credit accumulation.  Therefore, any credits earned part-time at TIOS can be transferred to a student's home school transcripts and count towards the accumulation of 30 credits for the OSSD.

6.   TIOS, and in fact all Ontario secondary schools, offer courses from Grade 9 to Grade 12.  Students from China or other countries abroad can transfer credits from home countries and these equivalent credits will be counted towards the OSSD.  Similarly, any volunteer work completed abroad can be converted to hours that count towards the total of 40 hours required to earn the OSSD.

How can my OSSD advantage me when applying to top universities?

The Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) is recognized worldwide as an entrance requirement for universities throughout Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong and more.

Canada

All students, both Canadian and international, who hold an OSSD, are considered equally for admission to all Canadian universities https://www.ouac.on.ca/ouac-101/

Asia

Students who complete their high school credits in Ontario and earn the OSSD are not required to complete university entrance examinations in their home country. Ontario graduates can apply directly to universities in Hong Kong, Singapore and other regions in Asia with their OSSD. In fact , many English-speaking universities throughout Asia exempt students from the IELTS requirement if they have obtained a minimum mark of 85% in ENG4U (Grade 12 English).

United Kingdom

Students who hold an OSSD are not required to attend preparatory and A-Level exams for admission to UK universities.

Australia/New Zealand

Students who hold an OSSD are not required to write exit examinations for admission to universities in Australia or New Zealand. In addition, since all students with an OSSD have passed ENG4U (Grade 12 English), they are not required to show evidence of IELTS proficiency.

United States

The US and Canada have similar education systems. OSSD holders have high rates of acceptance to American universities, and in some instances, no SAT is required.
